Candle Care
A few simple habits help every candle burn evenly and last longer.
The first burn
Let the first burn reach the edges of the vessel, so the wax melts across the whole surface. This helps the candle burn evenly afterwards and avoids a tunnel forming down the middle.
Trim the wick
Before each burn, trim the wick to about 5 mm. A short wick gives a steady flame and less smoke.
Burning
Burn the candle for a few hours at a time, then let it cool completely before you light it again. Keep it away from draughts so the flame stays steady.
Safety
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Keep it away from children, pets and anything that can catch fire.
- Place it on a flat, heat-resistant surface.
- Do not move the candle while the wax is melted.
Putting it out
Use a snuffer, or gently put a lid over the flame. Avoid blowing hard, which can throw hot wax and cause smoke. Never use water.
When to stop
Stop burning when about 1 cm of wax is left at the bottom. The vessel is then ready for its second life: see Vessel Reincarnation.
